CONTEXT
The Open Group's technical environment supported its standards, membership, certification programs, technical communities and internal operations. It included Drupal and other web applications, identity and access services, development platforms, collaboration systems, integrations and the production infrastructure behind them.
WORK
As Chief Systems Engineer, I designed, built and operated systems across that environment for ten years. I worked directly on Drupal and other web applications, infrastructure, identity and authentication, integrations, hosting, deployment and production operations.
I also moved production services from externally managed hosting onto infrastructure operated directly by The Open Group, migrating the applications and supporting services and establishing the environment needed to operate them internally.
GITLAB
I implemented and configured multiple GitLab servers for The Open Group. The primary community instance became community.opengroup.org, supporting the organization's technical communities and their development work.
OSDU
For the OSDU initiative, I migrated the subsurface data from the previous vendor into The Open Group's Azure Blob Storage environment. This included designing the storage approach and implementing the migration of the data into infrastructure operated for the initiative.
SLACK
I proposed Slack as a collaboration platform, built and ran the initial prototype, and then implemented it for The Open Group. It was subsequently adopted across the organization.
PLATFORM AND INFRASTRUCTURE
- Drupal and other web applications
- GitLab and development infrastructure
- OSDU data infrastructure on Azure
- Identity, authentication and access
- Collaboration systems
- Application and service integrations
- Production infrastructure
- Hosting and deployment
- Platform and application migrations
- Production operations and troubleshooting
OUTCOME
Over ten years, I helped move The Open Group from a collection of externally hosted and separately operated systems toward an environment the organization could operate and evolve directly. Platforms introduced during that work became part of the organization's day-to-day infrastructure, while major technical communities gained dedicated systems for development, collaboration and data.
